What a one-time passcode actually is
An OTP is a short numeric code, valid for a few minutes, generated by the platform you are signing up to. It proves that whoever holds the phone number is present at that moment — nothing more.
Because it expires quickly, the number only has to be reachable during the sign-up window. That is exactly what a rented verification number provides.
